Grotesques on the wall of the Gateway of Abingdon Abbey, Abingdon-on-Thames, UK. Although sometimes called gargoyles, the latter name is reserved for figures with the function of leading roof water to a drain-pipe. This gatehouse in one of the only remaining structures of the Abbey, but is extensively restored. Abingdon was situated in the county of Berkshire, but under local government re-organisation in 1974 it was transferred to Oxfordshire.
